Reading for the Middle Grade Non Fiction CYBILS was one of the most professionally rewarding experiences of the year. First off, when ever a diverse committee comes together to discuss a common passion, you walk away a wiser. We read a book through our own lens. Try as we might to incorporate other viewpoints, actually hearing from a group of experienced readers always brings new and unique perspectives. I am proud to have been a part of creating this year's shortlist, a robust selection of titles that will appeal to a variety of ages and readers. I hope anybody involved with children and reading will utilize this list as a resource for connecting sensational books with the readers in their lives.
Unfortunately, there was a tremendous amount of high-quality books competing for only seven spots on the shortlist. I wanted to take a moment to highlight two books not on the list that were very strong contenders and should especially appeal to middle grade boys. Below you'll find a quick overview of each book. Full write-ups are linked from the titles.
Call of the Klondike
This action packed tale of adventure will resonate with the survivalist. An adventure that will take readers directly into the heart of the untamed Yukon territory, Call of the Klondike is a treasure hunt like no other. Sparse narrative weaves together selected journal entries and letters home, creating a story rooted in primary sources. A style that creates a time capsule of adventure.
When The Beat Was Born: DJ Cool Herc and the Creation of Hip Hop
Today's society is a confluence of uncountable interests but music is an art that connects us all. Diverse in range, while we all have our own taste, it provides a tremendous vehicle for understanding the culture reflected in it. When The Beat Was Born tells the story of Clive Campbell, a boy who spent his childhood sitting outside house parties in his native Jamaica and later unified neighborhoods through dance. This picture book biography exemplifies its subject and provides context for hip hop's origins and evolution.
Both of these titles faced stiff competition and though they may have not made the short list, they are well deserving of an audience.
