Raina Telgemeier needs no introduction. You’d be hard pressed to find a middle grader who hasn’t adored Smile. Her forthcoming Sisters is a family memoir set during a road trip from San Francisco to Colorado.
“Similar to Smile, Sisters packs an emotional richness that will stick with readers. Telgemeier doesn’t shy away from life’s small tragedies, but also includes the good stuff too – big, breathtaking moments of unexpected beauty and small blink-and-you-miss-it pleasures.”
Regardless of whether Raina flashes back to the big, breathtaking or the blink-and-you-miss-it moments, each detail packs an emotional richness grounded in experiences that will resonate with every child, sibling or not. Make no mistake, the aggravation isn’t a balanced by sentimental. After all, family dynamics are seldom smooth sailing. Also, it’s tempting to lead your readers to the conclusion that those magical moments of understanding make all the hostility worth it. Sisters is exceptional because Raina is so good at avoiding “the lesson learned.” Her precision for storytelling enables this book to reach a completely satisfying conclusion without forcing readers to walk away clean and clear.
Sisters is another shining beacon of realistic fiction’s march back to prominence. For too long young readers longing for a more intricate story had to turn towards fantasy. Telgemeier shows the utmost respect for her young audience by telling simple, poignant stories with a very smart sophistication. Don’t be surprised to look back at Raina Telgemeier as a voice of this generation.
